Why does Utah need Planned Parenthood Association Utah:

Our typical patient in 2013 was an adult woman making less than $11,170 a year, and as with 93% of our clients, had no health insurance. She came to Planned Parenthood Association of Utah (PPAU) for high-quality health care services, including an annual exam and life-saving breast and cervical cancer screenings. She visited one of our health centers for affordable birth control so that she could plan her family.

PPAU is a leading provider of high-quality, affordable health care for women, men and young people in Utah. With 9 health centers and contract rural providers across the state, PPAU serves all patients with care and compassion, with respect and without judgment. We are a trusted source of reliable health information that allows people to make informed health decisions to lead healthy lives.

Dear Planned Parenthood,

I was born and raised in Utah - immersed in a culture that encourages early marriage. I was engaged at the young age of 19 and married just after turning 20. I lost my parents' insurance coverage when I married and as a struggling student, could not afford my own health insurance, nor could my young husband. I am so glad that I knew that I absolutely did not want children at that time and knew I could turn to Planned Parenthood for affordable birth control. Scraping together money to afford my reduced-cost regular depo shots was hard enough, so I can imagine how detrimental it would be for girls and women to not have this option, having to pay out-of-pocket for regular-priced birth control. That is an absolutely frightening thought.

Thanks to Planned Parenthood, I was able to earn my BS and my MA degrees at Utah State University without the worries of having to support a child I could not afford. I moved on to a career in social research at a highly-esteemed Eastern university and, after 10 years of marriage, decided I was ready to take on the role of motherhood. I now have two beautiful daughters and I couldn't imagine my world without them. I know that being able to plan my family was key in making me a much better mother. Who knows what my life would be now if I had become a mother at such a young age? I knew when I was ready. I will never be able to repay the life you paved for me. Your organization and the work you do to raise funds for anyone in the same shoes I was in is absolutely vital and I will do anything to stand by you, even if we have to revert back a hundred years and march for this service. A million thanks!!

Marisa, Hooper - I was a young newlywed/college student [when] I turned to Planned Parenthood who, based on a sliding scale fee, were able to supply me with monthly contraception for only $5 a month. Not only were their fees affordable, they provided me with possibly the most caring, competent, and kind medical services I have ever received.

Debra, Ogden - As a student putting myself through college, Planned Parenthood became not only crucial to my OB-GYN needs, but one could say they were my primary health care. I don’t know what I would have done without Planned Parenthood. I want to give other women the same opportunity for a healthy life that I have enjoyed.

Hannah, Salt Lake City - I had an unplanned pregnancy at a young age and could not afford a pregnancy test from the grocery store. My dear friend encouraged me to get a free pregnancy test from Planned Parenthood... so that I could find out sooner rather than later... to ensure a healthy pregnancy. My child may not have grown into a healthy, strong 5 year old without your reduced fee services.

Melanie, Salt Lake City - I am a married mother of a teenager in my late 30’s. I go to Planned Parenthood for my breast exams, pap smears, and general gynecological care. Thanks to Planned Parenthood, my cervical cancer was diagnosed early and was taken care of. Planned Parenthood quite literally saved my life.

Nicole, St. George - I have worked with Planned Parenthood for nearly 5 years. I have seen people come in crying or confused or scared, and leave empowered knowing more about their bodies and better able to make decisions that are right for them. I have seen knowledge replace confusion, empowerment replace fear, health overcome infection or disease.
